Beyond the Beaches: Discovering Phuket’s New Creative Heart at TCDC Phuket 2026

From Chartered House to TCDC Phuket: An exhibition showcasing the structural transformation of this 100-year-old Sino-Portuguese building from a mining bank into a creative hub.

TCDC stands for the Thailand Creative & Design Center, a state-supported resource and learning hub dedicated to fostering design, innovation, and the creative economy. Operates as a "Tourism Lab" to merge local cultural heritage and design with the tourism industry for sustainable growth.

It serves as a public resource center featuring design libraries, material databases, co-working spaces, workshops, and exhibitions for local entrepreneurs, artists, and visitors—including tourists—who are eager to learn about local culture, traditions, and the history of Phuket.

What you see in various activities in Phuket is partly the result of the combined ideas and creativity of local designers and related stakeholders. These concepts convey the local way of life, culture, food, and clothing.

For instance, the most unique and famous Phuket costume is the Baba-Nyonya, a Peranakan-style dress originating from the Hokkien Chinese-Malay ethnic group, commonly worn at festivals, auspicious occasions.

Phuket's events blend contemporary and traditional elements, preserving local heritage while showcasing the rich civilization of Phuket Province.

When tourists think of Phuket, they picture the sea, marine activities like island day trips, or entertainment venues, especially Patong Beach. But I believe there is another group of tourists who come to relax and learn about local culture and history in specific areas, particularly Phuket Old Town.

Ultimately, Phuket's uniqueness lies in its diverse range of attractions—spanning wellness, entertainment, and rich cultural heritage—that showcase the authentic civilization and lifestyle of its people.

I visited TCDC Phuket on August 9, 2026 ,during  it's grand opening week (August 7-11, 2026). I looked around a bit, and  whenever I have free time, I will definitely go back.I learned about the history of Phuket, such as  the history of Moken (sea  gypsies), the chartered Bank building, the tin mining era, and local Phuket heritage. One day is not enough; I need more time to explore and get inspired here.
